We are almost at the end of 2012. Are you finished writing your dissertation? Does Your New Year’s Resolution have anything to do with completing a PhD or writing a dissertation?
Many students working on their dissertation are shy about letting others know exactly what they’re up to. To complete your dissertation it is important to let others knows exactly what it is you are trying to accomplish. Many of us have heard others says that to accomplish a goal you must write it down. It doesn’t mean that you write down your dreams and aspirations and put them under your pillow. Let others know what you are trying to do so that they can support your effort even if it means leaving you alone to work on those goals. Many of my students write or post to a blog to keep track of their activities. What will you do differently in 2012?
Even if you have never posted on a social network before you can start posting here. This blog is dedicated to graduate students working on their comprehensive exams, proposals, and or doctoral dissertations. We have found that when working on a long-term goal it is important to let others, including loved ones, know what you are trying to accomplish. Just writing your goals down helps you to stay on track and posting them to a blog helps you to maintain some accountability to someone other than yourself.
Setting deadlines are important. Not only do you need to set a long-term goal such as finishing your deadline or graduating in 2012, but it is important to set mini-deadlines for when you want to complete your a draft of your dissertation, chapter, section, page, paragraph.
What will you be working on this semester? Join us online. We are excited to see who will be the first to post in 2012.
