I am still on the beautiful campus of Stony Brook University. Today we discussed Distilling the Message, Talking to and Through the Media and Writing for the Public. The first session speaker suggests that you should be able to clearly state what it is that you do and why does it matter? Do you have a ready answer for those two questions? In addition, I really enjoyed the last session on writing for the public. I was glad when the speaker confirmed that idea that graduate students struggle with English grammar. He suggests that it is something that should not be skipped or ignored. He runs a five week writing seminar for graduate students.
I wish that all graduate students could take advantage of a writing course that covers the basics. One exercise in particular that he mentioned involved writing an invitation to senior citizens to tell them about your research. This exercise should help graduate students clearly and succinctly write about their research without relying on jargon.
